76th Annual Bike Week

Every year, bike week events draw large crowds from all over the world. Daytona Bike Week is no different. It’s been a tradition for many families and riders for generations as one of the oldest bike weeks around. Since 1937, Daytona Bike Week has stood strong, attracting more people every year. 2017 will mark its 76th anniversary.

Hundreds of thousands of riders and motorcycle enthusiasts show up year after year to peruse vendors, new equipment and bikes, make new friends, and eat delicious food. Daytona has a lot to offer with scenic views, perfect warm weather, and plenty of routes to explore.

Daytona Bike Week will never disappoint. Grab your bike, some family or friends, and check out what Daytona has to offer.

Location

The main events take place on Daytona Beach in Florida on the east side of the Daytona International Speedway at 1801 W. Int’l Speedway Blvd.

It’s in the central East Coast of Florida. It neighbors Orlando 60 miles northeast, and is 88 miles south of Jacksonville.

It’s open 9am – 5pm daily, and kicks off March 10, and will conclude on Sunday, March 19th.

Food
There are several food vendors and food trucks, as well a ton of other options in the nearby vicinity in Daytona. Plus, there are several free BBQs at the event where you can enjoy great grub.

Activities

Daytona Bike Week is jam-packed with activities for everyone to enjoy. The Daytona International Speedway has events to take up the entire week, including the Daytona Supercross, Daytona 200, 600cc SuperSport International Challenge, the BMW “Legends of Racing”, Dirt Track races, and the Harley-Davidson museum.

Spend some time checking out vintage and custom bikes, an indoor and Dress Light show, concerts, fashion shows, and much more.

You can enter contests and raffles.  Furthermore, you can even try out new gear and models on free test rides.

While not at the Speedway, many riders like to travel north to St. Augustine, west to Tampa and Orlando, and south to Kennedy Space Center. The options are endless.

Route
Many cannot wait to ride along Daytona Beach, and feel the wind rush by on the Daytona International Speedway.

Besides, the main Daytona headquarters, Daytona also has a beautiful scenic route that’s a favorite among locals and visitors known as The Loop. It’s a 22-mile ride that gives you a full dose of Florida’s natural beauty. Surrounded by trees and national parks, riders can explore one of Florida’s oldest oak trees – the Fairchild.

Cost

Most events, activities and vendors are free; however, some events like the Daytona 200 require tickets.

Schedule
There are so many things to do – that’s why it lasts 10 days! Finding something to do isn’t hard, but choosing what to do may be the harder part. Some major events that are happening are:

Riders

In the off season there was a lot of speculation about who would be switching teams and who would be renewing their contracts. As it turned out, one of the biggest switches was Eli Tomac who joined Monster Energy Kawasaki.  Meanwhile, there had been rumors of Tomac’s contract, but they weren’t confirmed right away due to Tomac’s major shoulder injuries at Thunder Valley last summer. Finally, with four rounds complete Tomac is starting to look like he did before the massive crash.

James Stewart, a two-time (2007, ’09) AMA Supercross Champion, said that he’s not ready to retire but found it difficult to line up sponsors for 2017.  Meanwhile, he has been seen riding a Yamaha in his home state of Florida lately, but no official word has emerged from the Stewart camp as to his intentions for the future.

The opening round of the 2017 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship was January 7 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. Ryan Dungey tried to defend the number-one plate in the 450SX class. As well, a new champion will be crowned in the 250SX West Championship now that the 2016 West champ, Cooper Webb, has moved up to the 450SX class.

How to Attend

Scoring tickets to an event in the 2017 Supercross Season is simple and easy. Just remember, they can be purchased online or at the track prior to the race.  You can purchase tickets  for as low as $20, and are available the day of the event at ticket booths at the event. Generally, tickets cost $5 more if buying the day of, so be sure to nab your tickets early to locate the best seats and the best view.

Related 2017 Supercross Season Events

You can watch plenty of great Supercross this year and it is about more than just great racing. Also remember, the Pit Party at Supercross is a great place to score autographs and talk with your favorite riders. As a result, when you purchase a pit pass you can make it an all day even.  In addition, from 12pm – 6pm you can meet riders and nab a picture or two. Finally, tickets are available on the AMA Supercross site for the Pit Party.

It’s a lot of fun watching 2017 Supercross Season, but don’t forget how hard these guys work for their jobs.  Ever wonder how privateers get these bikes across the US to participate in all the races? Some riders use Motorcycleshippers.com, a shipping and transport service to assist with the move and then they simply fly to the location. It makes traveling with your bike easy.

Chances are you’ve heard how dangerous it is to ride a motorcycle. How you are just risking your life being on your bike and you must have a death wish. For the most part, motorcycle riding is safe. It requires you to be extra attentive and aware of your surroundings. You have to think more, but you are still able to relax and enjoy the ride.

Whether you’re going to the grocery store two blocks away or driving through open mountains in the fall, any rider will tell you, there’s nothing like the rumble of the bike beneath you and the feeling of being “one” or “whole” with your bike.

It is a lifestyle and a passion, and it also has numerous health benefits you may not have known you’ve been gaining. You can soak in these benefits regardless if you prefer to street ride or off-road ride. The benefits come from both types of riding.

Mental Outlook
When people think of health, they often see health in strict terms of the physical body and tend to overlook mental health. Motorcycle riding is beneficial for physical as well as mental and emotional health. There is an array of benefits and they are not limited to these listed. Riding off-road or on streets is a great way to enjoy physical exercise and clear your head for a while. But the big thing is, it helps your brain.

It improves your mood. Plain and simple. Riding makes you happy and boosts endorphins.

Riding increases energy levels and your mental outlook. This does wonders with regards to helping you increase your happiness and mental health, which in turn, increases your life span. Who doesn’t want to enjoy living a little longer so you can keep riding?

Core Strength and Stability
Just riding and enjoying a scenic view or riding to the grocery store down the street can improve core strength. Think about it. You have to work out your core just to keep yourself upright on a bike. Factor in some wind, and you are definitely working yourself out a lot more.

Maintaining the correct posture while riding also helps to keep your body in shape and can improve muscle tone because it’s a low-impact exercise.

Neck Strength
Riding can also improve your neck strength. For some, this may not seem like a big deal, but for others with back problems or neck problems, it’s almost like a therapy to the neck and back. Make sure your bike is fitted and adjusted to fit you correctly. Craning or straining your neck will do the opposite and you don’t want to do any damage to your body.

Stronger Knees and Thighs
It can also help strengthen your knees and thighs. Individuals with knee or thigh issues will find riding a motorcycle is a kind of physical therapy. It requires you use your knees and thighs, but without straining them too much. Over time, you’ll build muscle while eliminating any pains.

Calorie Burning
Have you ever thought you’re getting your daily exercise just from your motorcycle seat? Riding takes effort, especially compared to driving in a car. Just being a passenger on a motorcycle you can burn 50 calories, but as a passenger in a car?

It increases your insulin sensitivity too. This helps your metabolism, which will help you burn calories and store less fat.

Riding is fun. It’s an experience. You can enjoy these health benefits without even trying. You can’t complain about that. Now go out and ride!

Electric Motorcycles Are Gaining Popularity

Electric motorcycles are really fun transport motorcycles, and they are gaining popularity. Not only are they quick and nimble on the road, they are a hip topic.  Fun to ride and fun talk about.  They are green and fit in with our current culture.

Ridden by Law Enforcement

In fact over 50 law enforcement agencies have employed one or more of the trio of electric bikes made by Zero. These bikes have gained a positive response from sworn officers and the communities they serve.

Each bike creates its own tactical advantage for officers. Many are equipped with added extras and necessities such as emergency lights and sirens, storage options for gear, emergency medical equipment and other safety components.

Environmental Sustainability

One of the best aspects of these fun transport motorcycles is the small carbon footprint that they leave. Each bike is powered by electricity and can be charged for much less than the price of a gallon of gas. In a world where the health of the environment has become a growing concern, using electric vehicles and motorcycles is a great way to reduce our negative impact on the earth. In conclusion, they conserve energy from precious sources like gasoline and oil.

Sworn officers that patrol national parks are using electric motorcycles to help promote environmental sustainability with these low-impact bikes.

Provide Quietness for Stealth Patrolling

Since implementing these quiet electric bikes, communities have praised how quiet their cities have become. No more loud bikes from patrolling officers. Overall, this is especially helpful for those patrolling parks that do not want to disturb wildlife or announce their presence when approaching a crime scene.

Sworn officers have found that these quiet rides add an element of stealthiness to their patrolling duties which is one of the reasons traffic patrol teams have found them so useful.

Cost Effective

Unlike most gas powered motorcycles, these new “fun transport”motorcycles designed by Zero can be charged for less than 50 cents. This is significant cost savings compared to paying for gallons of gasoline with traditional motorcycles. Each year, gas prices rise, especially in populated areas with high demand like Los Angeles. The LAPD employed these bikes over a year ago and has seen how amazing these bikes can be for the department’s budget.

Over 50 law enforcement agencies have joined the LAPD to use less gas and spend less on government vehicles. As an added bonus, maintenance costs are low and easy, and repairs are almost non-existent for power trains.

Should lane splitting be illegal?

They do it in California

Much heated debate surrounds motorcycle splitting in California. In California, lane splitting isn’t explicitly permitted. The rules have always been murky; however, it may be outlawed soon. For many, it’s unnerving, annoying, and downright dangerous. Lane splitting is illegal in every state but the Golden State.

What is Lane Splitting?

Many riders use lane splitting as an accepted traffic practice. Simply stated, it is the act of riding a motorcycle between two cars in adjacent lanes.  Riders most often split lanes in rush hour or other heavy traffic conditions. They can weave through traffic with ease, often at speeds much higher than would seem safe.

Last summer, the California High Patrol removed lane splitting definitions, rules, and regulations from their learning materials, which makes safety information unattainable and confusing to the public.

Who is Trying to Pass the Law?

AB 51 is a bill that would make lane splitting legal. Introduced by assembly member Bill Quirk last December, so far it has been tabled this past July. Quirk plans to pursue the matter further in 2016.

The bill, if passed, would specifically make lane splitting legal when traffic is moving 30 mph or less, and riders drive no more than 10 mph faster than the slow traffic. This is handy for riders stuck in rush hour jams.

While many favor the bill, many oppose it. Several motorcycle groups deem the bill “problematic” and “too restrictive” to riders, and do not believe lane splitting is dangerous. There have been two previous unsuccessful attempts in California trying regulate motorcycle lane splitting.

Would it be more dangerous or safer?

This is the big question that has stopped AB 51 from passing or being vetoed. In part, the law would be difficult to enforce, and the speeds of surrounding traffic would be hard to pin point. Riders who are ticketed for lane splitting could win their argument against the ticket in court.

Some argue that riders who use speed and maneuverability could keep them and other drivers safe while in high traffic situations. Bike riders can easily weave through traffic, unlike their vehicle counterparts.

There is no proven evidence that lane splitting is more dangerous than a rider on a motorcycle driving in a marked lane, except if driving more than 10 mph faster than traffic. Some argue that enforcement of the bill would reduce injuries related to motorcycle accidents and enforce public safety.

Motorcycle Shipping Driver; John

We strive to have the best drivers in the country.   Great service is important and finding drivers with a strong moral compass is what drives our company’s success.  That is why we are excited to share a story about John, a motorcycle shipping driver, with you.

John is one of our flag ship motorcycle shipping drivers and he consistently provides white glove service to our customers. Most recently he was heading to an event between Denver and Sturgis when he came upon a rider who had a flat tire. Being the gentleman that he is, John stopped to assist the rider. He provided the tools required to fix the flat and re-inflated the tire so the rider could continue on.

What sets John apart from most is the little things he does that are not expected. To further drive home the point, upon regular deliveries he provides our customers with enough fuel to be able to ride immediately. In addition he checks their tire pressure after the long haul to ensure our customers safety.

His attention to detail and his kind heart are what made John one of STI’s 2014 SSQ (Safety, Service and Quality) winners.  Of course, this was a  highly regarded honor and a we will always cherish this story.

This level of mindfulness from our drivers has afforded Motorcycle Shippers the extraordinary customer loyalty we enjoy today.
