I recently came across a new motorcycle insurance company named VOOM insurance, where they introduced the first-ever Pay Per Mile motorcycle insurance in the United States.

Pay-per-mile motorcycle insurance means you only pay for the miles you actually ride on your motorcycle. It’s a different approach to what we are used to, where we would pay a yearly premium whether or not the bike sees any action.

It works pretty simply. There’s a monthly base rate, and it’s a super low amount. Then, every month, riders will submit a photo of their odometer reading. Based on that, VOOM will calculate a fee based on the miles you ride. These fees aren’t that drastic, as riders will pay less than a cent per mile. If they don’t ride their bike very far, they’ll see their rate drop for the next month.

There are three types of packages that a rider can choose. Each package has its own level of insurance, and everything is customizable to your needs. The whole process is fully digital and intuitive.

I wondered, who would benefit the most with VOOM? And is it really worth it? It depends on your riding style. I contacted a representative and they said.

“The first set is obvious: riders who don’t travel many miles in a year will benefit from a usage-based plan, instead of buying annual coverage that’s based on the assumption of more miles traveled. If you only travel short distances when you ride or only ride occasionally, this plan might save you money. VOOM’s plan is ideal for riders who ride less than 2,500 miles a year, which is just about the national riding average.”

This motorcycle insurance is perfect for those who have multiple bikes, have forced riding seasons, ride occasionally, or for whatever reason, don’t get to ride a lot.

VOOM is currently available in Arizona, Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana. They are expanding to other states soon.
